My name is Caitlin Hyem. I'm a final-year Broadcast Journalism student at the University of Salford.

Music has always been my biggest passion. I grew up regularly going to gigs since the age of five, listening to music from all genres, and reading NME magazines my dad had gone through with a Sharpie hiding all of the swear words... or at least most of them. In 2017, I realised I wanted to be the one writing those articles and interviewing bands. I was already so passionate about telling people about upcoming bands, whether it was my family, my friends or even my teachers. I just needed to find a better way to do it.

So, I founded the successful music review site, Alternative Atmosphere. My first post was a live review of RIDE at Leeds Beckett's Student Union. I thought I'd interview the gigs I went to. But then I started recieving lots of music submissions. Bands wanted me to review their music. So I branched out into single, EP and album reviews. I quickly gained recognition for my in-depth, creative articles, and I would get 5 star reviews from all the bands and managers I worked with. Although I stopped Alternative Atmosphere in 2021 because I didn't have the time to run it on my own to my best ability, I am so grateful that it allowed me to build an impressive portfolio before university, network with industry professionals and form great relationships with musicians I believe will have very successful futures.

So with no Alternative Atmosphere, I needed a new passion project. This time in the form of a radio show. When I got to the University of Salford, I joined Shock Radio (Manchester's biggest student station). For the last three years, I have presented and produced my own specialist indie-rock show called Alternative Airwaves. My aim for the show is to champion upcoming artists, as well as showing appreciation for more established acts too. I also regularly interview bands on my show, and constantly try to further my skills and improve segments on the show. Alternative Airwaves was nominated for best specialist show and best evening show at the 2022 Shock Radio Awards.

During my time at the University of Salford, I have increased my skill set and continued to strive for the highest level of quality in my work. I was shortlisted for the 1st Year Student Award at the Journalism Awards 2021.
